Thickness Measurement

What is concrete thickness measurement?

Concrete thickness measurement is a non-destructive testing method (NDT) that allows us to determine the exact thickness of concrete floors, walls, ceilings, and other structural elements. Without the need to drill or break, you receive reliable data on the structural thickness, which you need for load-bearing calculations, renovation plans, or quality control in new construction.

During a concrete thickness measurement, we use the Hilti PS1000 X-Scan to determine the thickness of a concrete structure without damaging the material. The ground-penetrating radar sends electromagnetic waves through the concrete that reflect off the back side of the element, allowing us to accurately measure the total structural thickness. This is important when construction drawings are not available, when you want to verify whether the executed concrete thickness matches the design, or when you need a structural engineer to assess the load-bearing capacity of an existing floor or wall.

How does concrete thickness measurement work?

Concrete thickness measurement is performed with the Hilti PS1000 X-Scan ground-penetrating radar. The device is moved across the concrete surface and sends electromagnetic pulses into the concrete. When these pulses reach the back side of the concrete element (for example, the underside of a floor or the interior side of a wall), they reflect back to the scanner. Based on the signal travel time, the software calculates the exact thickness of the concrete. The measurement is completely non-destructive: no drilling or breaking is required, and the concrete surface remains undamaged. Results are available immediately on-site, allowing you to make decisions about your project right away.

When do you need concrete thickness measurement?

Concrete thickness measurement is used in renovation projects where original construction drawings are missing or unreliable. Structural engineers need the measurement data for load-bearing calculations when the function of a space changes or additional load is placed on a floor. For quality control of new construction, it can be verified whether the concrete thickness meets specifications. When planning core drilling, it is also important to know the total concrete thickness. Architects, structural engineers, construction companies, and property managers in North Brabant and surrounding areas use our concrete thickness measurements for reliable structural data.

What do you receive?

On-site measurement with immediate verbal advice on the concrete thickness found. A digital report (PDF) with all measurement results, measurement locations, and photos. Clear overview drawing with measured thicknesses per measurement point. Advice for structural engineers or clients regarding the measurement results. Report delivery: within 24 hours after the measurement.
